Descendants: Wicked Wonderland returns to the magical world of the franchise with a story shaped by the consequences of time travel. In the fifth Descendants movie, Red and Chloe discover that their previous choices have rewritten the history of an entire kingdom. As the daughters of the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella, Red and Chloe once again find themselves at the center of the chaos. For Kylie Cantrall and Malia Baker, returning to Red and Chloe brought its own sense of transformation. Cantrall found that stepping back into Red felt familiar, but the character no longer seemed exactly the same. After gaining new experiences between movies, she approached Red as a more mature, grounded and empowered version of the character. That personal growth became something she could bring directly into her performance.
Baker experienced a similar change when returning to the franchise. Having been only 15 during the earlier stages of her Descendants journey, she came back with additional life experience and a greater appreciation for the world surrounding the films. Both returning stars also found themselves welcoming new cast members, describing the experience almost like becoming camp counselors for the next group joining the adventure.
That combination of familiarity and change appears to define Wicked Wonderland. Red and Chloe are recognizable characters, but both the performers and their fictional world have evolved. The altered kingdom gives them new challenges, while their increased confidence allows them to face those problems from a different perspective.
With fantasy, music, time travel and another journey through the colorful world of Descendants, Wicked Wonderland opens a new chapter while building on what came before. For Cantrall and Baker, it is also an opportunity to show how much their characters have grown, bringing renewed energy to Red and Chloe as they attempt to put Wonderland back on the right path.
