Black proved once again that simplicity does not have to mean playing it safe at the 2025 Venice Film Festival. Across premieres and screenings, actresses transformed the classic color through dramatic silhouettes, sheer fabrics, embroidery and couture craftsmanship. Monica Barbaro, Greta Gerwig, Rebecca Ferguson, Léa Seydoux and Cate Blanchett each offered a distinctly different interpretation. Their outfits ranged from romantic and delicately detailed to sharply structured and gothic. Together, the appearances demonstrated just how versatile a black gown can be on one of cinema’s biggest red carpets.
Monica Barbaro attended the premiere of After the Hunt in an intricate Dior gown. The high neck design featured extensive pleating and a sash positioned across the hips, creating movement while maintaining an elegant silhouette. Greta Gerwig chose a more romantic approach for the premiere of Jay Kelly, directed by her husband Noah Baumbach. Her custom one shoulder Rodarte gown combined layers of tulle with floral embroidery and sparkling crystal details.
Rebecca Ferguson brought a stronger gothic influence to the premiere of A House of Dynamite. Her custom Maticevski gown featured a dramatically structured shape, woven fabric and an asymmetric design with one long sleeve. The floor length silhouette created a commanding presence, while matching black nails extended the monochrome styling into the smallest details.
Léa Seydoux took black eveningwear in a more revealing direction at the Silent Friend screening. Her Louis Vuitton ensemble layered sheer panels over a fitted black bodysuit, balancing transparency with carefully placed coverage. Rather than relying on elaborate embellishment, the look used contrasting textures and strategic layering to create visual interest while maintaining a sleek silhouette.
Cate Blanchett provided another memorable example of how red carpet fashion can have a second life. For the festival’s opening night, she returned to a black Armani Privé gown featuring a fitted silhouette and plunging neckline. Blanchett had previously worn the design to the 2022 SAG Awards, making its Venice appearance another example of her willingness to revisit pieces from her wardrobe. From elaborate couture construction to creative reuse, these looks showed that black remains a red carpet essential precisely because there is no single way to wear it.
