For generations of gamers, Mario is far more than a character on a screen. The mustached Nintendo hero has been jumping through colorful worlds, battling enemies, and rescuing friends for decades. His history stretches back to Donkey Kong, where the character who would become Mario appeared in one of gaming’s earliest recognizable stories. That legacy gave The Super Mario Bros. Movie an enormous world to explore when it arrived in 2023. Taylor-Joy felt the interpretation made sense because Peach is responsible for a flourishing kingdom and therefore needs the strength to protect its citizens. When Bowser threatens everything she leads, Peach prepares to fight alongside Mario instead of remaining on the sidelines. The approach keeps recognizable elements of the games while allowing the character to become one of the adventure’s driving forces.
Chris Pratt provides Mario’s voice, while the wider cast includes Charlie Day as Luigi and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Creating Toad’s distinctive sound became an amusing challenge for Key. He initially developed the voice by taking inspiration from someone he knew, but the directors encouraged him to push the character’s already energetic voice even higher. The exaggerated result fits the tiny Mushroom Kingdom resident, whose enthusiasm and courage make him an important companion during Mario’s journey.
Part of the movie’s appeal comes from how enthusiastically it embraces the world players already know. Instead of treating its video game origins as something to hide, the film fills its adventure with familiar personalities and playful references to Nintendo’s history. At the same time, its voice cast brings fresh interpretations to characters whose identities were largely established through games rather than lengthy dialogue. For longtime fans, that creates the pleasure of seeing childhood memories transformed into a cinematic world.
