Kaya Scodelario has built a career that stretches from groundbreaking British television to some of Hollywood’s biggest franchises. Born Kaya Rose Humphrey in England to a Brazilian mother and English father, she later adopted her mother’s surname, Scodelario. Growing up in London was not always easy, and she has spoken publicly about experiencing bullying and struggling with dyslexia at school. Acting eventually became an important creative outlet, giving her a place to build confidence while imagining a future beyond the difficulties of her teenage years.
Scodelario found comfort performing in school productions before taking an extraordinary leap into professional acting. At just 14, despite having little professional experience, she was cast as Effy Stonem in the British teen drama Skins. The series became known for launching several young actors, including Nicholas Hoult and Dev Patel. Effy developed into one of the show’s most recognizable characters, giving Scodelario the opportunity to take on increasingly complex material and establish herself as a rising British performer.
Her ambitions soon expanded beyond television. After making her film debut, Scodelario appeared in several projects before achieving worldwide recognition as Teresa in The Maze Runner franchise. In 2017, during the wider MeToo movement, she shared her own experience of sexual abuse and spoke about how long it had taken her to discuss what happened. Despite international recognition, Scodelario has repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining a life beyond celebrity.
