Robert Downey Jr. has transformed himself from a Hollywood bad boy into one of the industry’s most recognizable stars, and his evolution can be seen not only in his career but also in his approach to fashion. Known for sharp suits, bold combinations, and distinctive eyewear, Downey has rarely treated the red carpet like an ordinary dress code. Instead, his appearances often reflect the same playful confidence that has made him such a memorable Hollywood personality.

Much of that style evolution happened during his years as Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As one of the central faces of Marvel’s first decade, Downey attended premiere after premiere in looks that deliberately stood apart from traditional celebrity tailoring. For Doctor Strange, he combined a classic suit with military-inspired camouflage, while the Spider-Man: Homecoming premiere saw him embrace an all-black look. During the promotion of Avengers: Infinity War, he experimented with wearing T-shirts beneath tailored suits across appearances in Los Angeles, Shanghai, and Singapore.

By the time Avengers: Endgame arrived, Downey was equally comfortable with a more sophisticated approach. He appeared in Givenchy for the film’s debut, demonstrating how easily he could move between playful experimentation and polished formalwear. His fashion choices continued to evolve with Dolittle in 2019, when he coordinated with his wife Susan Downey in Armani. He added a cravat inspired by his character and metallic bronze boots from Los Angeles brand MOBS, creating an outfit that felt theatrical without abandoning its tailored foundation.

Downey’s style became even more adventurous during the Oppenheimer press tour in 2023. At the London photocall, he opted for a relaxed light gray suit, pale blue shirt, and Santoni sneakers, creating a comfortable but carefully styled appearance. Later that evening, he switched to a loose-fitting gray Tom Ford ensemble for the premiere. The relaxed silhouette suited his personality, and he even broke into a dance on the red carpet, adding another memorable moment to the appearance.

The 2024 awards season showed just how broad Downey’s fashion range had become. At the Palm Springs International Film Awards, he stood out in a baby pink Stella McCartney suit. At the Golden Globes, he coordinated with Susan in a deep burgundy Dior outfit, while his Oscar-winning appearance took a more dramatic direction. Accepting his first Academy Award, Downey wore a black Saint Laurent ensemble featuring flared trousers and a leather necktie, complemented by Susan’s black velvet gown. The following year, he brought the flared silhouette back in Gucci, proving that experimentation had become a signature rather than a passing phase.

In 2026, Downey returned to the Marvel spotlight at San Diego Comic-Con to unveil Avengers: Doomsday. This time, his outfit reflected a darker chapter in his superhero universe, with a black blazer embroidered with glowing green runes connected to his new villainous role. From playful tailoring to award-season elegance and Marvel-inspired spectacle, Robert Downey Jr. has made the red carpet his own. His fashion choices continue to show that polished style does not have to mean predictable style.
