Tom Cruise has spent more than four decades finding new ways to keep audiences watching. His early career established him as a charismatic leading man, but he quickly demonstrated ambitions beyond conventional movie star roles. Films such as Risky Business and Top Gun created his heartthrob image, while Born on the Fourth of July and A Few Good Men revealed greater dramatic range. Then came another transformation, one that increasingly connected Cruise with large scale action filmmaking. Through Mission: Impossible and a commitment to practical stunt work, he created a screen identity built around physical risk, precision and spectacle.

Cruise’s dramatic credentials were already firmly established before he became synonymous with Ethan Hunt. His performance as Vietnam veteran Ron Kovic in Born on the Fourth of July earned him his first Academy Award nomination. Later projects including Jerry Maguire and Magnolia demonstrated that he could move between mainstream entertainment and emotionally complicated characters.

Mission: Impossible changed the direction of his career again in 1996. Cruise not only starred as IMF agent Ethan Hunt but also served as a producer, helping turn the television adaptation into a long running film franchise. As the series developed, its increasingly ambitious practical action sequences became central to both the films and Cruise’s public image.

His stunts have included scaling the exterior of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, clinging to the side of an aircraft during takeoff and completing a motorcycle jump from a mountain before opening a parachute. Such sequences require extensive preparation, specialized crews and careful safety planning. Cruise’s willingness to perform demanding action himself helps filmmakers capture his face and body directly within the stunt, giving audiences a stronger sense that Ethan Hunt is physically experiencing the danger.

That commitment has occasionally resulted in injury. While filming Mission: Impossible Fallout, Cruise famously broke his ankle while jumping between buildings. Footage of the take was ultimately used in the film, and production temporarily stopped while he recovered.

Cruise has also explored action outside the Mission: Impossible series. Collateral cast him against type as the cold and calculating Vincent, while Jack Reacher presented another physically capable but morally complicated protagonist. Edge of Tomorrow mixed science fiction with action and dark humor, forcing his initially reluctant character through the same deadly battle repeatedly.

Top Gun: Maverick provided another major career milestone in 2022. Returning as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell more than three decades after the original, Cruise combined nostalgia with extensive aerial filmmaking and a new generation of characters.

Cruise’s longevity comes partly from understanding what audiences expect from him while continually increasing the challenge. Drama established his range, but practical action became his defining specialty. Rather than simply playing an action hero, he turned preparation, physical performance and cinematic spectacle into essential parts of his Hollywood identity.
