Kunal Nayyar did not originally move to the United States with dreams of becoming a television star. Born in London and raised in New Delhi, he arrived in America at 18 to attend university and pursue a business degree. Acting entered his life almost accidentally, beginning as a way to meet people and become involved in campus life. Before long, the stage became more exciting than his original career plans. That unexpected discovery eventually led him to The Big Bang Theory and one of television’s most recognizable sitcom characters.

Nayyar spent most of his childhood in New Delhi after his family returned to India when he was young. At school, he was interested in sports and competed in badminton. His direction changed after moving to the United States to study at the University of Portland, where he earned a degree in business with a focus on finance.

College also introduced him to theater. Nayyar has recalled taking acting classes partly to make friends, while his interest in a theater student encouraged him to audition for productions. The romance did not develop as hoped, but something more lasting did. Performing gave Nayyar a new creative ambition, and he began taking acting seriously.

After completing his undergraduate studies, he continued his training at Temple University in Philadelphia, earning a Master of Fine Arts in acting. He worked on stage and pursued auditions before landing the opportunity that transformed his career. In 2007, Nayyar was cast as astrophysicist Raj Koothrappali in The Big Bang Theory.

Raj became a central member of the show’s group of scientists and friends. Early episodes frequently built comedy around his extreme shyness with women, but the character developed considerably as the series progressed. Nayyar remained with The Big Bang Theory throughout its entire 12 season run, appearing alongside Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg and the rest of its ensemble until the finale in 2019.

Away from his fictional character’s complicated romantic life, Nayyar found a lasting relationship of his own. During a trip to India, he met model and former Femina Miss India winner Neha Kapur after being introduced through family connections. The couple married in New Delhi in 2011, celebrating with an elaborate traditional Indian wedding spread across several days.

Since The Big Bang Theory, Nayyar has continued exploring different kinds of performances, including television drama, film, theater and voice acting. Moving beyond a character he played for more than a decade has allowed him to demonstrate a broader range.

His career began with finance studies and a casual introduction to theater rather than a carefully designed Hollywood plan. That unexpected path ultimately became his defining one, proving that sometimes discovering the right career begins simply by being willing to try something new.
