Red carpet fashion has never been limited to simple gowns and traditional silhouettes. Some of the most memorable celebrity looks use exaggerated proportions to transform clothing into something almost sculptural. The bubble skirt, with its rounded volume and tucked hem, is a perfect example. Designers can make it romantic, futuristic or deliberately theatrical depending on the fabric and construction. Halle Bailey, Amelia Gray, Michelle Yeoh, Ariana Grande and Adwoa Aboah have all demonstrated just how differently the distinctive shape can be interpreted.
Halle Bailey embraced a sophisticated version at the 2023 Glamour Women of the Year Awards. Her black and white Nicole + Felicia Couture mini dress combined a fitted dark bodice with a voluminous white skirt. The contrasting sections created a dramatic floral effect, while the compact length kept the oversized proportions balanced. It was a playful alternative to the conventional little black dress.
Amelia Gray took the concept into much more experimental territory at the 2024 Met Gala. She wore a yellow Undercover creation by designer Jun Takahashi featuring a transparent terrarium style skirt containing delicate roses. Combined with her wet look hair, the design appeared almost like a miniature garden sealed inside a bubble. It was an imaginative interpretation of the evening’s Garden of Time dress code and showed how dramatically the silhouette can be reinvented.
Michelle Yeoh offered another approach at the 2023 Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards. Her Schiaparelli couture ensemble paired an orange cropped jacket with a voluminous metallic blue skirt and dark tights. Instead of relying on a traditional floor length gown, the contrasting colors, textures and proportions gave the outfit a distinctly architectural quality.
Ariana Grande has also embraced dramatic volume. At the 2020 Grammy Awards, she arrived in an enormous pale blue Giambattista Valli gown before changing into another voluminous design from the house in soft gray. Her looks demonstrated why oversized silhouettes have become such an effective red carpet tool. Carefully structured fabric can create enormous visual impact while maintaining an elegant overall shape.
At the 2024 Met Gala, Adwoa Aboah used volume for a particularly personal fashion moment. The model revealed her pregnancy in a custom red H&M ensemble featuring a cropped top and dramatic bubble shaped skirt. The exposed baby bump became central to the silhouette, turning the outfit into both a fashion statement and a memorable announcement.
These appearances show that the bubble skirt is far more versatile than its playful name suggests. Whether created with couture construction, transparent materials or exaggerated fabric, it gives designers room to experiment with proportion and movement. On a red carpet crowded with traditional gowns, sometimes making the silhouette bigger is exactly what makes a look memorable.
