The original Book Club centered on four older women whose lives were shaken up after their reading group tackled Fifty Shades of Grey. Its follow-up expands that spirit of reinvention by sending the friends overseas. Jane Fonda, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, and Mary Steenburgen return as Vivian, Diane, Sharon, and Carol, giving the film the chemistry that made the first story work. Director and co-writer Bill Holderman has emphasized how essential that ensemble was, describing the cast as the heart of the entire project.
Italy is more than a backdrop in the sequel. Rome’s streets, historic squares, churches, restaurants, and other recognizable locations help turn the movie into a travel adventure as much as a comedy about friendship. The characters walk through places such as Piazza della Rotonda while embracing the freedom of being somewhere completely different. Many of Rome’s landmarks could not simply be recreated on a studio set, so the production had to work around tourists and everyday city life. That often meant arriving very early and completing scenes before crowds became too large. By around midmorning, some locations could become too busy for a major film shoot. An experienced Italian production crew helped the filmmakers navigate those tight windows and capture the real locations rather than relying on substitutes.
That authenticity gives Book Club: The Next Chapter much of its visual charm. The movie combines the warmth of a reunion with the appeal of an Italian holiday, but its bigger message is about staying open to new experiences. Its central characters may joke about retirement and age, yet they continue to chase excitement, connection, and change. By sending them through some of Italy’s most beautiful settings, the sequel turns a simple girls’ trip into a reminder that friendship can keep opening doors to unexpected chapters at any stage of life.
