A Small Light shifts attention toward Miep Gies, the courageous woman who helped shelter Anne, her parents and others from Nazi persecution in Amsterdam. By telling the story from Miep’s perspective, the limited series explores what extraordinary courage can look like when an ordinary person is confronted with an impossible choice.
Bel Powley stars as Miep, while Liev Schreiber portrays Anne’s father, Otto Frank. When Otto asks Miep to help hide his family, the enormity of the danger is immediately clear. Yet Miep does not approach the decision as an opportunity to become a hero. Her response is instinctive and deeply human. When challenged about the risks she takes, she questions why anyone should need permission before deciding to save another person’s life.
For Schreiber, revisiting this chapter of history remains important even though Anne Frank’s experience has been dramatized many times. He argues that destructive social patterns can return when people fail to recognize them. Misinformation, scapegoating, division and extreme nationalism are among the warning signs he believes audiences should understand through history. Remembering what happened is therefore not simply about looking backward, but also about recognizing how societies can become vulnerable to similar forces.
The challenge for A Small Light was finding a way to make such familiar historical material accessible to younger generations without diminishing its seriousness. Schreiber praised Powley’s performance for helping achieve that balance. Rather than portraying Miep as a distant historical figure, Powley brings humor, personality and contemporary energy to the character. Those qualities allow audiences to see her as a young woman navigating relationships, work and everyday life while simultaneously accepting enormous personal risks to protect others.
A Small Light ultimately expands the familiar story of Anne Frank by focusing on someone whose actions helped make that story possible. Miep Gies could not know how history would remember the people she protected or the diary Anne left behind. She simply recognized people in danger and chose to help them. By placing that decision at its center, the series offers a powerful reminder that history is shaped not only by major events and powerful figures, but also by ordinary individuals who decide that remaining silent is no longer an option.
