Not since ancient times, when cats, felines, and domestic pets were worshipped as gods, have our feline friends been so culturally significant. From cat-inspired fashion, kitty decor, feline festivals, to Instagram-famous pets, there are plenty of reasons why it’s a great time to be a cat. But it’s perhaps an even better time to be a cat lady.

The old image of a cat lady—wild-haired, eating lonely TV dinners, surrounded by dozens of cats in a messy apartment—is gone. Today’s cat lady is a different breed: sophisticated, independent, and tech-savvy. She shares adorable photos of her cats on social media platforms like Instagram and Snapchat, tagging her pets with clever cat puns that showcase their personality, charm, and undeniable pawsomeness.

Taylor Swift exemplifies this modern cat lady. The pop star frequently shares Instagram photos and clips featuring her two Scottish fold cats, Olivia Benson and Meredith Grey.

Taylor Swift explains, “It would appear that my painting of a relaxing grey sky has lulled Meredith to sleep. Put her in a very tranquil place.”

“This one is refusing to move when I have to make the bed.”

“Olivia, what’s happening down there? You okay? Is everything alright?”

Swift isn’t alone in flaunting her feline obsession. Many celebrities, from Katy Perry with Kitty Purry to Elisabeth Moss with Ethel, and Miley Cyrus with her three cats Lilo, Keke, and Shanti, proudly display their love for their pets online.

And let’s not forget the men! Celebrity cat owners, sometimes jokingly called “crazy cat guys,” include Ed Sheeran with Dorito and Calippo, and Ricky Gervais with Ollie.

Why cat videos, photos, and celebrity pet posts are so wildly popular online is still somewhat mysterious, but the trend is clear: cats, social media, celebrity culture, and fandom have combined to make felines an internet obsession. With so many A-List stars showing off their pets, it might be time to retire the “crazy cat lady” stereotype for good.
