Spending years wearing clothes from leading designers can provide a unique education in fashion. For some models, that experience eventually inspires them to move from representing brands to creating businesses of their own. Alessandra Ambrosio, Gigi Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski, Victoria Beckham and Heidi Klum have all explored fashion beyond modeling, although their paths into design and entrepreneurship have been very different. Their ventures range from swimwear and knitwear to luxury ready to wear and lingerie. Together, they show how experience in front of the camera can evolve into creative work behind a brand.
Alessandra Ambrosio expanded beyond modeling with Ále by Alessandra, a fashion and lifestyle line launched in 2014. Its relaxed aesthetic drew inspiration from the Brazilian model’s beach influenced style and included pieces designed to move between casual and more polished settings. Ambrosio later entered the swimwear market with GAL Floripa, created with her sister Aline and friend Gisele Cória. The project reflected her connection to Brazil and the coastal lifestyle closely associated with her public image.
Gigi Hadid gained hands on design experience through her highly visible collaborations with Tommy Hilfiger. Their Tommy x Gigi partnership produced several collections between 2016 and 2018, combining Hadid’s personal style with the American brand’s established identity. In 2022, she took another step by launching Guest in Residence, a knitwear brand centered on cashmere. The company gave Hadid a platform of her own and demonstrated her interest in creating pieces designed to remain useful beyond a single fashion season.
Emily Ratajkowski followed a similarly entrepreneurial path with Inamorata. Launched in 2017 with swimwear at its core, the label later expanded into additional categories including clothing and lingerie. Ratajkowski has also used her enormous social media presence to model and promote the products herself, effectively combining the roles of founder, creative force and campaign star.
Victoria Beckham represents a different fashion evolution. Best known initially as a member of the Spice Girls, she later established herself as a serious designer with the launch of her namesake fashion label in 2008. Over time, the business developed a recognizable minimalist aesthetic and expanded beyond clothing into accessories and beauty.
Heidi Klum has also turned her modeling fame into a wide collection of fashion and lifestyle ventures. Over the years, she has attached her creative input and name to products ranging from clothing and footwear to fragrances and lingerie. These careers demonstrate that modeling can provide more than visibility. For those willing to understand the business behind the clothes, the runway can become valuable preparation for building a fashion identity of their own.
