A promising first date becomes an international disaster in Ghosted, the 2023 action comedy starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas. Evans plays Cole, an ordinary man who quickly becomes fascinated by Sadie, a mysterious woman who appears to be everything he has been looking for. After their date, however, Sadie suddenly stops responding to him. Cole is convinced there must be an explanation and refuses to accept that he has simply been ghosted. His attempt to prove it leads him much further from home than he could ever have expected.
After discovering that Sadie is in London, Cole decides that surprising her there would be the perfect grand romantic gesture. It sounds charming in his imagination, but reality quickly destroys the fantasy. Cole walks directly into a dangerous situation and discovers that Sadie has been keeping an enormous secret. She is not living the ordinary life he imagined. She is a highly trained CIA operative involved in a dangerous mission, and his unexpected arrival puts him in the middle of a world he is completely unprepared to handle.
The reversal gives Ghosted much of its comedy. Evans is widely associated with physically capable action heroes, particularly through his years playing Captain America, but Cole is deliberately different. He is vulnerable, inexperienced, and frequently overwhelmed by the violence unfolding around him. De Armas takes on the more capable action role as Sadie, who must repeatedly manage dangerous situations while also dealing with Cole. Their contrasting abilities allow the movie to play with familiar action movie expectations while developing its central romance.
Sadie’s profession also creates the biggest obstacle between them. Her work depends on secrecy, discipline, and emotional distance. Forming close relationships can create vulnerabilities, so she has learned to avoid carrying the emotional attachments that might interfere with a mission. Cole represents almost the complete opposite. He is openly emotional and increasingly invested in their connection, even while being chased, captured, and thrown into situations he barely understands. The more he learns about Sadie’s real identity, the more complicated his feelings become.
Ghosted ultimately combines the structure of a romantic comedy with the scale of an international spy adventure. Cole begins the story believing that traveling across the world will prove his romantic instincts correct, only to discover that he has misunderstood almost everything about Sadie. Yet the chaos also forces both characters to reconsider how they approach relationships. Cole has to recognize the difference between romance and reckless impulsiveness, while Sadie must decide whether protecting herself emotionally is worth remaining disconnected from others. Their unusual second date may involve considerably more danger than expected, but it gives them something an ordinary evening never could, the chance to discover who the other person really is.
