What happens when the world’s most famous vampire becomes the boss you desperately need to escape? Nicolas Cage’s Dracula provides the film with its flamboyant supernatural menace. Cage has explained that his fascination with vampires stretches back to childhood, when his father showed him classic black and white movies using a projector at home. One particularly powerful influence was the 1922 silent horror film Nosferatu, featuring Max Schreck as the terrifying Count Orlok. Schreck’s unusual movements, intense eyes, and elongated fingers left a lasting impression on Cage, helping shape his own approach to playing an unmistakably theatrical vampire decades later.
The central conflict, however, is less about destroying a monster than finding the confidence to confront one. As Renfield becomes increasingly aware of how badly he has been treated, he starts reclaiming pieces of the person he was before Dracula dominated his life. The language of self respect and personal boundaries becomes especially funny when applied to an immortal vampire who expects absolute obedience. Yet beneath the exaggerated violence and comedy is a recognizable struggle. Renfield wants freedom, happiness, and the chance to make decisions without constantly fearing his master’s reaction.
That contrast gives Renfield its distinctive personality. Dracula may have supernatural powers, but his control over Renfield also depends on fear, guilt, and manipulation. By turning one of horror’s oldest servant and master relationships into a story about breaking free from a toxic dynamic, the film finds something unexpectedly relatable inside a century old legend. Renfield’s greatest challenge is not merely surviving Dracula. It is finally believing that his own life is worth taking back.
