Space Oddity takes a trip toward Mars, but its real journey is much closer to home. The romantic science fiction drama follows Alex McAllister, a young man who has become disconnected from life on Earth and believes a one way mission to Mars could offer him a new beginning. His decision worries his family, who are already dealing with problems surrounding their flower farm and Alex’s uncertain future. Kyle Allen plays Alex, while Alexandra Shipp stars as Daisy. The movie combines romance, comedy and science fiction rather than treating the Mars storyline as a traditional space adventure. Alex’s fascination with leaving Earth becomes a way of exploring uncertainty, grief and the pressure people feel to keep moving toward some idea of success. Allen has spoken about his own fascination with outer space, particularly the thought that concepts such as up, down, forward and backward lose their usual meaning once people look beyond Earth.
Space Oddity was directed by Kyra Sedgwick and written by Rebecca Banner. The film had its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival in 2022 before receiving a wider release in 2023. Sedgwick’s real life husband, Kevin Bacon, plays Alex’s father, Jeff McAllister, bringing another layer of familiarity to the family centered story. The supporting cast also includes Madeline Brewer, Carrie Preston and Simon Helberg, giving the film a strong ensemble around Allen and Shipp.
Working with Bacon was especially memorable for Allen, who praised his commitment to the role and his ability to connect naturally with the environment of the family’s farm. Rather than simply treating the character as another performance, Bacon helped make the setting and family tensions feel grounded. That becomes important because the film’s biggest questions are not really about rockets or distant planets. They concern whether Alex should escape from the life he knows or face the relationships and responsibilities waiting for him on Earth.
