The cast of the Fast and Furious movies loves to describe themselves as family. But like any family, sometimes the bonds get tested. And in this crew, big personalities can mean even bigger clashes.
The first major falling-out happened early on when Vin Diesel didn’t return for 2 Fast 2 Furious. He wasn’t impressed with the script and reportedly turned down a $25 million offer to appear. Things seemed calm for a while after that, at least publicly, until The Fate of the Furious rolled around.
During production, Dwayne Johnson posted a now-deleted Instagram rant aimed at some of his male co-stars. He wrote that some behaved like true professionals while others were “too chicken to do anything about it” and “candy asses.” He even hinted that when his anger looked real on screen, it was because it was. Although he never named names, it quickly became clear he was talking about Vin Diesel, something Michelle Rodriguez later confirmed. Vin’s response was cryptic. “Give me a second and I will tell you everything,” he told fans. But that follow-up never came. In interviews, he explained that he’s careful about what he posts online, saying he avoids posting when frustrated because he doesn’t want to affect people’s moods in a negative way.
While Johnson and Diesel have since smoothed things over to some degree, fans noticed they avoided each other during promotions and shared minimal screen time in the film. Newcomer Scott Eastwood even recalled how most of the stars spent their downtime in their trailers instead of together.
Then came another feud, this time between Tyrese Gibson and Johnson. Tyrese’s frustration began when Johnson and Jason Statham landed their own spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw. He became even more upset when that film’s production delayed F9, pushing back its release date. In a fiery Instagram post, he accused Johnson of breaking up the Fast Family and claimed the franchise had always worked best when everyone stayed united. He later explained that actors like himself and Ludacris know their roles and don’t let ego get in the way, adding that each cast member brings something unique to the table without competing with one another.
And then there was Michelle Rodriguez, who threatened to walk away from the series if the female characters didn’t get more attention. She pointed out that Jordana Brewster was written out of The Fate of the Furious, Nathalie Emmanuel’s role was scaled back, and Elsa Pataky’s screen time was limited to supporting Vin Diesel’s character arc.
With more films on the horizon, one thing seems certain. The high-octane action isn’t just happening on screen; this “family” has plenty more drama left in the tank.
