The 1980s are often remembered as a decade of questionable movies, but they also hold a special place in film history; full of nostalgia and unforgettable classics.

It was the last era before the digital revolution, when the magic of movies was created without the help of computers, making the hits and misses all the more memorable.

While many great films were released, some stood out so much that they launched entire franchises. Here are our top three movie series that began in the ’80s.

Before we count down, some notable films that didn’t quite make the cut include RoboCop, Rambo, Mad Max, The Karate Kid, Die Hard, and A Nightmare on Elm Street.

3. The Terminator (1984)

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s defining role as the relentless cyborg assassin turned this sci-fi thriller into an instant classic. Its huge success spawned multiple sequels including Terminator 2, widely regarded as one of the best action films ever made.

Arnold explained that the Terminator character actually comes from the seventies, so viewers see two versions of the Terminator, one protecting the machines, the other protecting humans, creating an epic battle. The franchise became famous for its groundbreaking special effects and intense action scenes, filmed under grueling schedules.

2. Back to the Future Trilogy

Michael J. Fox’s portrayal of 17-year-old Marty McFly captured the spirit of the ’80s perfectly. This time-traveling adventure remains a cultural touchstone, with just three films but a lasting legacy.

Michael J. Fox said he especially enjoys playing “old Marty,” the character who launched his career, and expressed deep gratitude for the role.

1. Indiana Jones Trilogy

The adventures of the world’s coolest archeologist set the gold standard for action-adventure films. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Harrison Ford, these movies mix mythology, fantasy, and pure entertainment.
